Rec Room is a virtual reality, online video game with an integrated game creation system developed and published by Rec Room Inc. (formerly known as Against Gravity) playable on Windows, PlayStation 4/5, Oculus Quest 1/2, Xbox One/Series S/X, iOS 12.0 and up, and Android 7.1 and up. It was released for Windows in June 2016, PlayStation 4 (with PSVR support) in November 2017, Oculus Quest in May 2019, iOS in November 2019, Oculus Quest 2 in October 2020, Xbox One (Series S/X using backwards compability) in December 2020, Android in August 2021, and PlayStation 5 in December 2021.
The game may be played with or without a virtual reality headset, specifically a SteamVR headset, Oculus headset, or PlayStation VR headset. In virtual reality mode, the game uses full 3D motion via the motion capture system of a virtual reality headset and two hand-held motion controllers, which are required to pick up and handle objects in the game world, including balls, weapons, construction tools, and other objects. Players can explore the space around them within the confines of their physical floor-space while roaming further by using the controller buttons to teleport a short distance, with minimal or no virtual reality sickness. A “walking” mode enables players to move continuously rather than teleporting; however, this poses a higher risk of motion sickness.
It was appeared in the 2022 r/place by both staff and community and is part of The Central Alliance.
History
Day 1: April 1st, 2022
On Rec Room's official Discord server, A staff member at Rec Room known as Star Centurion asked the community to place the Rec Room logo on r/place. After he asked, the community agreed and puts the first iteration to r/place, covering up the flag of Finland. Since there was a cooldown, Many staff members like emilywafflesyay and the community work hard to add the pixels and defend the space from trolls. The first iteration is a smiley face (Known as Coach) found on the game's icon and logo. Later, the community added the aberration of Rec Room (RR) at the top of Coach (Separated by a black border). For a brief time, they replaced the 'RR' part with the Maker Pen (If you think it's a gun, then why?) But changed back to 'RR' after.
Day 2: April 2nd, 2022
They have to move to the bottom at the canvas (at the time) since they need to add something at the space it's occupying and reverted it back to the 'RR' part. Later, They changed the 'RR' part to have white text with an orange background.
Day 3: April 3rd, 2022
When the canvas expanded at the bottom, they abandoned the original spot and made the full logo with 'r/' at the top of the first r in the logo.
Day 4: April 4th, 2022
A person in the community partnered with the VRChat Modding Group and made the VRChat/Rec Room logo mashup at the taskbar.
The Day after the event: April 9th, 2022
On April 9, A room called ^PlaceAfterParty was made in the game and it shows the Rec Room logo on the spot, plus a 'private invention' in the room.
Trivia
r/place
- Sometimes, trolls accidentally add 2 pixels to Coach's face, To the community, it looks like Coach had a nose because they "added" noses in Rec Room on April 1st.
- The last logo tends to have the among us person inside the letter c.
- They were attempts to make the letters T, F, and O in the entire canvas to signify 'The Forbidden One' but were later scrapped because of the people defending their spot thinking its trolls.
- When the canvas expand to the left, there was attempt to put the logo there. They abandoned it after people put random pixels.
Publicity
- Many streamers that show r/place either did not see it, or they see it but do not mention it.
- Dream did see the 5th version of the logo on his stream, but just said "Oh, Rec Room."
Game
- At the time, an In-Game event called 'League of Heroes' was in progress, the community wanted to add the symbols to r/place, but it was too big. So, it's not added.
