The subreddit was originally established in August 2013 while the Discord server was created in December 2020. As a space where hundreds of thousands of college applicants come together to form a community, ApplyingToCollege has grown exponentially in recent years. It has been featured in a variety of news publications throughout its time, most notably for its Southern Rhode Island Institute of the Arts (SRIIOTA) project.

==Southern Rhode Island Institute of the Arts==

Southern Rhode Island Institute of the Arts (SRIIOTA) was created in February of 2021 with the purpose of misleading a moderator of the r/ApplyingToCollege subreddit into believing it was a real school. With the first draft of the website created in approximately three hours on the ApplyingToCollege Discord server, the school became a hit within the community.
