ApplyingToCollege is both a subreddit[1] and Discord community[2] for those looking for undergraduate college admissions help. The subreddit was originally established in August 2013 while the Discord server was created in December 2020. As a space where hundreds of thousands of college applicants come together to form a community, ApplyingToCollege has grown exponentially in recent years. It has been featured in a variety of news publications throughout its time, most notably for its Southern Rhode Island Institute of the Arts (SRIIOTA) project.
Southern Rhode Island Institute of the Arts
Southern Rhode Island Institute of the Arts (SRIIOTA) was created in February of 2021 with the purpose of misleading a moderator of the r/ApplyingToCollege subreddit into believing it was a real school. With the first draft of the website created in approximately three hours on the ApplyingToCollege Discord server, the school became a hit within the community. Many posts going along with the joke were created, including a viral video of an ApplyingToCollege Discord server member pretending to get into SRIIOTA through its Early Decision II program.[3]
