Taiwan's first flag was established shortly after the beginning of r/place 2022 following a post on r/Taiwan from r/gsdeman<ref name=":0" />.

The "Taiwan independence flag" is a flag made by the World Taiwanese Congress, and is the most common flag used by Taiwan independence supporters. The original design was informally proposed by ht12345 as an attempt to swap the design of the ROC flag with it<ref>https://discord.com/channels/959467908315111444/959529206369366026/959850328185004142</ref> mere minutes before the first canvas expansion. It was established to be the design Taiwan would make in the first canvas expansion shortly after.

After failing to secure a location beside the [[XjPooh]] and the [[r/brasil|Brazilian flag]], Taiwan decided to establish the flag to the left of the flag of [[Ireland]] and above the [[Czech]] flag. This led to the establishment of an alliance with [[Ireland]] and strengthening the existing alliance with the [[Czech]].

The "East Asian Trio"<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/taiwan/comments/tukuro/the_east_asian_trio/</ref>, also referred to as the Asian Trio, was a group of the flags of Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan between Ukraine and the Denmark area of the [[Nordic Union]].

Approximately a day after r/place started, a flag of Japan was noticed to appear at (316,158). It was quickly joined by a flag of South Korea to the left of it. Members from [[r/china place]] sought to establish a flag of Taiwan beside South Korea, which was completed shortly after. However, this led to a dispute between the Taiwan and Korea communities, as Korea originally planned to give the space to their left to a Tunisian flag. The Taiwan community was mostly in favor of Taiwan giving up its flag there, however there was slight opposition to the consensus by a member of the discord. The first canvas expansion happened shortly after, diverting everyone's attention away from the area and leading to the flag of Taiwan staying in that area.

A flag of Mongolia appeared on top of the Taiwan flag at the East Asian Trio, which was repeatedly destroyed by the Nordic Union. Taiwan served as a mediator role between the two communities in their dispute, who both proposed that Taiwan give the flag at that location to Mongolia. Significant amounts of time were spent by a representative of the Taiwan community to negotiate a favorable solution for all parties, but eventually conceded to the original proposed solution in exchange for significant amounts of support for Taiwan. While met with limited opposition, Taiwan's community unaminously voted in favor of giving the flag to Mongolia, with 106 in favor and 0 against<ref>https://discord.com/channels/959467908315111444/959523971726966845/960415075850666045</ref>.

In the end, after some instability in the region, Taiwan was able to successfully give the flag to Mongolia with the help of a Mongolian streamer. On the final version of r/place, a heart in the design of the flag of Taiwan can be found under the flag of Mongolia, as part of the tribute to Ukraine.

One heart in the design of the flag of Taiwan could for the most part found in the heart flag area of the Ukrainian region, where flags of countries supporting the Ukrainians in the defense of their country against the invasion by Russia expressed their support. It was from time to time under attack, for example during a period of time where the flag hearts were attempted to be changed into Russian flags. The attacks were, however, defended against, and in the end, one could still see the flag of Taiwan, below and slightly to the right of where the flag of Taiwan in the East Asian Trio were originally to be found.

When the flag of Ukraine spanned the entire canvas on the first day, a flag heart chain was noted by members of the discord. Taiwan sought to establish two hearts on the chain, one for Taiwan ROC and one for Taiwan independence, under the area of former Romania. The heart of Taiwan independence, originally on the right of Taiwan ROC, was for some time the target of [[Nigeria]]<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/Nigeria/comments/tu3c2x/the_heart_at_703x162_can_be_changed_into_a/</ref>, who sought to convert the heart to the flag of Nigeria. Taiwan and Nigeria later established an agreement where Taiwan would cede the original independence heart to Nigeria and re-establish it on the left of Taiwan ROC in exchange for an alliance between the two communities<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/Nigeria/comments/tu5sas/rtaiwan_agrees_to_let_nigeria_have_the_heart/</ref>.

These hearts were short-lived, as Romania seized the surrounding area some time after.

== Coordination Techniques Used ==

Taiwan's r/place community decided early on to forego overlays and bots and instead used [http://sheets.google.com/ Google Sheets] as the primary method of design and coordination. Cells on the table were made to be square, and colored in manually. The first row and column of a table were used to show the y and x axis coordinates of a given pixel. Every time a new design was finalized, it was sent in a dedicated announcements channel in the Discord. This method proved to be effective enough that it was used by Taiwan until the very end.

This method was flawed in that it took time for word of the latest plans to get out. This led to miscommunication with members outside of the discord, who remained diligent in defending the existing plans and inadvertently blocking members of the Discord from accomplishing the latest plan.

While some members of the community were known to use bots, it was not officially endorsed by representatives of the community until 2 hours before r/place ended, when Taiwan accepted an invitation to join Hong Kong's bot network.

Ideas for several automation tools, including a Discord bot to automatically generate various types of images given pixel art input<ref>https://discord.com/channels/959467908315111444/961016928992891010/961832641475264522</ref> as well as an online portal to display all necessary information<ref>https://discord.com/channels/959467908315111444/961016928992891010/961841840288563271</ref>, were proposed as suggestions for the next r/place. The "Taiwan independence flag" is a flag made by the World Taiwanese Congress, and is the most common flag used by Taiwan independence supporters. It was established to be the design Taiwan would make in the first canvas expansion shortly after.

The "East Asian Trio"<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/taiwan/comments/tukuro/the_east_asian_trio/</ref>, also referred to as the Asian Trio, was a group of the flags of Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan between Ukraine and the Denmark area of the [[Nordic Union]].

Approximately a day after r/place started, a flag of Japan was noticed to appear at (316,158). It was quickly joined by a flag of South Korea to the left of it. Members from [[r/china place]] sought to establish a flag of Taiwan beside South Korea, which was completed shortly after. However, this led to a dispute between the Taiwan and Korea communities, as Korea originally planned to give the space to their left to a Tunisian flag. The Taiwan community was mostly in favor of Taiwan giving up its flag there, however there was slight opposition to the consensus by a member of the discord. The first canvas expansion happened shortly after, diverting everyone's attention away from the area and leading to the flag of Taiwan staying in that area.

A flag of Mongolia appeared on top of the Taiwan flag at the East Asian Trio, which was repeatedly destroyed by the Nordic Union. Taiwan served as a mediator role between the two communities in their dispute, who both proposed that Taiwan give the flag at that location to Mongolia. Significant amounts of time were spent by a representative of the Taiwan community to negotiate a favorable solution for all parties, but eventually conceded to the original proposed solution in exchange for significant amounts of support for Taiwan. While met with limited opposition, Taiwan's community unaminously voted in favor of giving the flag to Mongolia, with 106 in favor and 0 against<ref>https://discord.com/channels/959467908315111444/959523971726966845/960415075850666045</ref>.

In the end, after some instability in the region, Taiwan was able to successfully give the flag to Mongolia with the help of a Mongolian streamer. On the final version of r/place, a heart in the design of the flag of Taiwan can be found under the flag of Mongolia, as part of the tribute to Ukraine.

One heart in the design of the flag of Taiwan could for the most part found in the heart flag area of the Ukrainian region, where flags of countries supporting the Ukrainians in the defense of their country against the invasion by Russia expressed their support. It was from time to time under attack, for example during a period of time where the flag hearts were attempted to be changed into Russian flags. The attacks were, however, defended against, and in the end, one could still see the flag of Taiwan, below and slightly to the right of where the flag of Taiwan in the East Asian Trio were originally to be found.

When the flag of Ukraine spanned the entire canvas on the first day, a flag heart chain was noted by members of the discord. Taiwan sought to establish two hearts on the chain, one for Taiwan ROC and one for Taiwan independence, under the area of former Romania. The heart of Taiwan independence, originally on the right of Taiwan ROC, was for some time the target of [[Nigeria]]<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/Nigeria/comments/tu3c2x/the_heart_at_703x162_can_be_changed_into_a/</ref>, who sought to convert the heart to the flag of Nigeria. == Coordination Techniques Used ==

Taiwan's r/place community decided early on to forego overlays and bots and instead used [http://sheets.google.com/ Google Sheets] as the primary method of design and coordination. Cells on the table were made to be square, and colored in manually. The first row and column of a table were used to show the y and x axis coordinates of a given pixel. Every time a new design was finalized, it was sent in a dedicated announcements channel in the Discord. This method proved to be effective enough that it was used by Taiwan until the very end.

On Day 1, the 16 available colors were red, orange, yellow, dark green, light green, dark blue, blue, light blue, dark purple, purple, light pink, brown, white, light gray, gray, and black.

The first K-Pop Alliance formed out of necessity directly after the first expansion of r/place 2022. Competition for space in the first quarter of the canvas was extreme and most representation of the K-Pop communities was erased, requiring most fandoms to either coordinate their efforts and maintain a combined presence, or risk losing their projects to larger, non-K-Pop communities.

A post-Whiteout count of pixels directly controlled by K-Pop groups was estimated to be around 43 thousand.

Only a handful of K-Pop fandoms managed to attain representation for their favorite groups prior to the First Expansion of the Canvas, and fewer would manage to remain.

TWICE, Kep1er, IZ*One, and Enhypen would be erased for building onto the Belgium and German flags, and a small block of groups would be erased approximately 40 hours into r/place. Only Blackpink, BTS, and LOONA would continue standing.

==1st Expansion==

Immediately after the First Expansion, the TWICERS (the r/place division of TWICE) would develop and create a new TWICE logo underneath the German Flag (1558, 852) and develop an alliance with r/MFDOOM due to being neighbors, the latter eventually becoming an honorary K-Pop group. These two would found the largest group of K-Pop fandoms called '''Girl Group (GG) Alley'''. A region dedicated to all female K-Pop groups. =====Raids on South Block=====

In the closing hours of r/place, multiple Spanish streamers targeted South Block as a location to immortalize themselves. Attempts by the Alliance and their Allies to re-capture the area failed due to a combination of high viewership between the streamers, estimated to be over 30k, extreme vigilance from viewers to maintain the area, and alleged botting.

65% of K-Pop groups in South Block would be erased, and approximately 1/3 of South Block was captured.

As a final effort to recover from the loss of South Block, an agreement between Good Mythical Morning (GMM) and the K-Pop Alliance saw GMM release claims on an unused part of their territory (1296, 368) for Alliance use, naming the region North Block in memorial of South Block.

One of GMM's neighbors, Lovejoy, entered into an alliance with the K-Pop Alliance to split the area between the two. During negotiations, Ottawa Senators (having lost representation elsewhere) swept in to claim the area for themselves, forcing Lovejoy and the Alliance into a joint war against Ottawa.

r/place 2022 would conclude before the war's resolution.

The '''Titulus Crucis''' (Latin for "Title of the Cross") is a plaque that Roman soldiers put on the Cross above Jesus during the Crucifixion. The Latin on this plaque reads "Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum," which means "Jesus the Nazarene King of the Jews." This representation of the Titulus Crucis was often referred to as "the INRI" for brevity's sake.

The location of the Titulus Crucis began in the second expansion of the canvas, around the 1265,553 position. Once the [[r/FFXIV|Final Fantasy meteor logo]] entered the area, the Titulus was moved to its 1315,537 position of the canvas, where it stayed for more than 40 hours thanks to the efforts of the Servus Dei members and the alliances in the area.

The initial I was successfully constructed at the 1265,553 position, followed by the N, since to the left of the Titulus was pixel art but to the right laid only [[The Void]]. The N was successfully constructed with minimal griefing, though by this point the lettering was large enough to be read from afar. The group was able to complete the R, but before work began on the final letter, the border of [[r/MonaLisaCrew]] cut through the Titulus. While Servus Dei tried to combat them, [[r/FuckCars|a rogue road construction]] completely obliterated the Titulus. As the chaos in the region lessened, more and more pixel art efforts firmly established their territories, overtaking the Mona Lisa and road, both of which were subsequently abandoned.

=== Reconstruction on the Road ===

Most members of this project then gave up, but one user ([https://www.reddit.com/user/RosaryPursuit u/RosaryPursuit]) refused to lose hope. He insisted on recreating the Titulus, but this time on the abandoned road. He designed it to be smaller and less obtrusive to projects outside the road while taking advantage of the yellow road tiles and black border. Contacting personal friends for short-term help, he was determined to finish the Titulus, even if alone. And he succeeded.

Once u/RosaryPursuit finished constructing the Titulus, Servus Dei members found renewed hope, suggesting a white background reminiscent of a white-and-gold chasuble. It was at this point that the admins of Servus Dei created a dedicated thread to separate the r/Place discussion from the general chat, and u/VoidZapper began pinning tactical information to better coordinate the group.

Thanks to his diplomacy and wit, u/RosaryPursuit convinced most of the griefers to leave the project alone, and in his correspondence with one group, [[The Wheat Farm]], he created our first alliance. When [[r/FFXIV]] entered the area to create their meteor logo, they began to grief the Titulus, as it sat where the bottom of their logo was planned to be. So, u/RosaryPursuit negotiated a treaty between us, granting us safe passage to another location. The r/FFXIV group, in fact, helped to move the Titulus to its third location.

The Titulus was moved over an abandoned portion of the [[Rainbow Road]] under the [[Aphex Twin]] logo. Our second ambassador, u/mrworthwhilewayfarer, then joined our effort, literally staying up all night to protect the Titulus. Over the course of r/Place, he would lead our night watch twice, refusing to go to sleep and leaving the Titulus defenseless.

=== Peace, Reconstruction, and Antivoid ===
Our ambassadors established more alliances with [[r/twewy]] and [[r/716Place]], as well as [r/wintergatan]], and peace resided in the region. The [[Helluva Boss]] group had created the [[I.M.P. logo]] by this point, and their right border and our left border overlapped. Since they had their own alliance with r/FFXIV, they and we left each other alone for the most part. Conflict arose, however, over the border issue. The Helluva Boss group began heavily griefing us, and showed no signs of leaving the Titulus alone, so our ambassadors parlayed with them and negotiated peace. We agreed to move by one pixel, with the blessings of r/twewy whose territory we encroached upon. We thereby successfully established the Titulus where it would stay until the end of r/Place.

It was this great alliance that protected the Titulus throughout the night and the next day and a half. While the Servus Dei group was mostly sleeping, our neighbors protected us from raids, and likewise when the r/wintergatan group slept, the Servus Dei group protected them from similar attacks. The peace was so stable that we sought out and helped defend pixel art far from the Titulus, such as the statue of [[Christ the Redeemer]], originally created by [[r/Brazil|r/Brasil]] users.

Near the end of r/Place, the streamer [[xQc]] attacked the area of the Titulus in a drive-by onslaught. These griefers completely destroyed the r/twewy Player Pin and most of the art to the right of us, including the Titulus itself. Within 20 minutes, however, we and our allies reconstructed the Titulus as though nothing had happened. We also helped rebuild r/twewy's Player Pin based on its new red design, the r/716Place art, and the r/AphexTwin logo.

Servus Dei (Latin for "servant of God") is a [https://www.discord.gg/Catholic Discord] server that organized the effort to ensure Jesus' representation on the canvas, including the Titulus, the statue of [[Christ the Redeemer]], and other religious imagery on the canvas. By the end of the event, the Titulus Crucis remained on the canvas for over 40 hours.

The effort to create the Titulus Crucis on r/Place began when various groups of Catholic redditors started discussing the creation of the Vatican flag. However, no groups began organizing before April 1, leading many to give up on the flag effort before it even started. Then, on April 2 after the first canvas expansion, u/VoidZapper went to Servus Dei, a server he moderates, asking, "Yo does anyone want to do the Vatican flag on r/Place?" He suggested they simply try to "get Jesus on the board" with an easy-to-construct and easy-to-defend design. Various members showed interest, and he then informed them that he'd already started and had two yellow tiles placed.

u/VoidZapper communicated with two other Discord servers about the project Servus Dei started, but very few individuals outside of Servus Dei voiced any interest.

Before anyone had a clue of what to actually create, u/CatholicMemer (one of the admins of the server) suggested writing INRI, as it was "simple and doable." Immediately, u/VoidZapper created a few basic reference images for the group. Redditors unaffiliated with this project, believing this to be another [[Ukraine|Ukrainian flag]], began adding more yellow than necessary, leading to a re-design.

The "Taiwan independence flag" is a flag made by the World Taiwanese Congress, and is the most common flag used by Taiwan independence supporters. The original design was informally proposed by ht12345 as an attempt to swap the design of the ROC flag with it<ref>https://discord.com/channels/959467908315111444/959529206369366026/959850328185004142</ref> mere minutes before the first canvas expansion. It was established to be the design Taiwan would make in the first canvas expansion shortly after.

After failing to secure a location beside the [[XjPooh]] and [[Brazil]], Taiwan decided to establish the flag to the left of the flag of [[Ireland]] and above the [[Czech]] flag. The "East Asian Trio"<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/taiwan/comments/tukuro/the_east_asian_trio/</ref>, also referred to as the Asian Trio, was a group of the flags of Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan between Ukraine and the Denmark area of the [[Nordic Union]].

Approximately a day after r/place started, a flag of Japan was noticed to appear at (316,158). It was quickly joined by a flag of South Korea to the left of it. Members from [[r/china place]] sought to establish a flag of Taiwan beside South Korea, which was completed shortly after. However, this led to a dispute between the Taiwan and Korea communities, as Korea originally planned to give the space to their left to a Tunisian flag. The Taiwan community was mostly in favor of Taiwan giving up its flag there, however there was slight opposition to the consensus by a member of the discord. The first canvas expansion happened shortly after, diverting everyone's attention away from the area and leading to the flag of Taiwan staying in that area.

A flag of Mongolia appeared on top of the Taiwan flag at the East Asian Trio, which was repeatedly destroyed by the Nordic Union. Taiwan served as a mediator role between the two communities in their dispute, who both proposed that Taiwan give the flag at that location to Mongolia. Significant amounts of time were spent by a representative of the Taiwan community to negotiate a favorable solution for all parties, but eventually conceded to the original proposed solution in exchange for significant amounts of support for Taiwan. While met with limited opposition, Taiwan's community unaminously voted in favor of giving the flag to Mongolia, with 106 in favor and 0 against<ref>https://discord.com/channels/959467908315111444/959523971726966845/960415075850666045</ref>.

In the end, after some instability in the region, Taiwan was able to successfully give the flag to Mongolia with the help of a Mongolian streamer. On the final version of r/place, a heart in the design of the flag of Taiwan can be found under the flag of Mongolia, as part of the tribute to Ukraine.

One heart in the design of the flag of Taiwan could for the most part found in the heart flag area of the Ukrainian region, where flags of countries supporting the Ukrainians in the defense of their country against the invasion by Russia expressed their support. It was from time to time under attack, for example during a period of time where the flag hearts were attempted to be changed into Russian flags. The attacks were, however, defended against, and in the end, one could still see the flag of Taiwan, below and slightly to the right of where the flag of Taiwan in the East Asian Trio were originally to be found.

When the flag of Ukraine spanned the entire canvas on the first day, a flag heart chain was noted by members of the discord. Taiwan sought to establish two hearts on the chain, one for Taiwan ROC and one for Taiwan independence, under the area of former Romania. The heart of Taiwan independence, originally on the right of Taiwan ROC, was for some time the target of [[Nigeria]]<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/Nigeria/comments/tu3c2x/the_heart_at_703x162_can_be_changed_into_a/</ref>, who sought to convert the heart to the flag of Nigeria. Taiwan and Nigeria later established an agreement where Taiwan would cede the original independence heart to Nigeria and re-establish it on the left of Taiwan ROC in exchange for an alliance between the two communities<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/Nigeria/comments/tu5sas/rtaiwan_agrees_to_let_nigeria_have_the_heart/</ref>.

These hearts were short-lived, as Romania seized the surrounding area some time after.

== Coordination Techniques Used ==

Taiwan's r/place community decided early on to forego overlays and bots and instead used [http://sheets.google.com/ Google Sheets] as the primary method of design and coordination. Cells on the table were made to be square, and colored in manually. The first row and column of a table were used to show the y and x axis coordinates of a given pixel. Every time a new design was finalized, it was sent in a dedicated announcements channel in the Discord. This method proved to be effective enough that it was used by Taiwan until the very end.

This method was flawed in that it took time for word of the latest plans to get out. This led to miscommunication with members outside of the discord, who remained diligent in defending the existing plans and inadvertently blocking members of the Discord from accomplishing the latest plan.

While some members of the community were known to use bots, it was not officially endorsed by representatives of the community until 2 hours before r/place ended, when Taiwan accepted an invitation to join Hong Kong's bot network.

Ideas for several automation tools, including a Discord bot to automatically generate various types of images given pixel art input<ref>https://discord.com/channels/959467908315111444/961016928992891010/961832641475264522</ref> as well as an online portal to display all necessary information<ref>https://discord.com/channels/959467908315111444/961016928992891010/961841840288563271</ref>, were proposed as suggestions for the next r/place.
