}}
The States Lion was a collaborative pixel art during pl3 of the communities of Belgium, The Netherlands, and Luxembourg during pl3. Together these countries form the Benelux, a politico-economic union. The countries have languages and history in common. In particular they formed one faction together in the Eighty Years' War.

The lion historically represents the Low Countries area as a whole, since each constituent nation possesses a coat of arms featuring the Leo Belgicus; a lion rampant facing left. During the 17th century the lion already symbolized the Low Lands.

pl3
The States Lion pixel art was completed around 9:00 GMT on July 24th on partly the flag of The Netherlands, and partly on the Orange Pennant where it would remain until the end.

The Leo Belgicus is featured on the coat of arms of each member nation of the Benelux union. The symbol originates from the Eighty Years' War (1566 – 1648), and it symbolized the Dutch Republic that fought for its independence. The Dutch Republic consisted of what is present-day Belgium, The Netherlands, and Luxembourg.

The symbol is also featured in the coat of arms of the house of Orange-Nassau, which William the Silent founded, and of which descendants belong to the royal family of The Netherlands, among whom are the current king and queen of The Netherlands: Willem-Alexander and Máxima.

The German boy and Dutch girl characters were a collaborative art piece meant to symbolize the cooperative relationship that the communities of PlaceNL and PlaceDE developed in the course of r/place_2023. It was completed around 18:00 GMT on July 25th, and remained until the Great Whiteout.

Collaboration
During the third edition of r/Place, the communities of PlaceDE and PlaceNL had collaborated on several other pieces before these characters came about. See the German-Dutch Yin-yang, the German-Dutch Bicycle, the German-Dutch Poland Balls, and the German-Dutch Picture Frame articles. This pixel art can be considered the culmination of that mutually beneficial partnership; only being completed shortly before the whiteout of 2023.

Kabedon
Kabedon (Japanese: 壁ドン; kabe, "wall", and "don", "bang") in Japanese media is a means of expressing romantic love or adoration. The seducer leans over the object of their desire by placing their open palm on the wall behind them and reducing the distance between themselves, but making no physical contact.
Kabedon has garnered recognition in the Western world through media such as shōjo manga, otome games, anime, and cosplay. When Kabedon is performed in the West, it's usually meant as an expression of meme culture.

The Characters
The artwork referenced by the pixel art is a panel of the manga Ao Haru Ride (Blue Spring Ride).

The boy was dressed in traditional lederhosen and wore a Tyrolean hat; this is a stereotypical Bavarian outfit, which may be associated with Germany. He held a frothy pint of beer, a reference to Oktoberfest.

The girl was not intended to depict Frau Antje, a mascot who advertises cheese of Dutch origin in Germany, but a link can be drawn between them. She wore a Volendam dress and a Dutch bonnet. And she carried a wheel of cheese by means of a handbag.
Development of the pixel art started with the proposal of a PlaceNL member to collaborate with PlaceDE on a pixel art where both countries are represented by manga charactersCitation needed. Different parts of the characters were then designed by, and reviewed by several members of both communities in a continuous back and forth.

During the development phase, a suggestion had been made to crop the image above the boy's crotch. The purpose of which was to mitigate the anticipated vandalism that would take the form of phallic shapes, which are not an uncommon sight on r/Place.
And it's possible—but not necessary—for a member of PlaceNL to hold both as their motivation.

History
William the Silent, more commonly known in the Netherlands as William of Orange, was the main leader of the Dutch revolt that set off the Eighty Years' War and resulted in the formal independence of the Dutch Republic in 1648. Due to this achievement, he is known in The Netherlands by the honorific title: Father of the Fatherland.
He remained stadtholder until his death; a steward of the provinces.

William the Silent founded the house of Orange-Nassau, which would eventually take over the reign of Napoleon over The Netherlands in 1815 and produce the Dutch monarchs. Each time the monarch is succeeded, the title of Prince(ss) of Orange is transferred to the eldest child of the new monarch.
Orange, the principality, was an attractive refuge to huguenots, who had been the victim of persecution in France at the time. That ended when Orange was captured and annexed by France in 1672 and in 1682. Finally, in 1713 the territory of Orange was ceded to France in the Treaty of Utrecht. But the title of Prince(ss) of Orange was held on to by members of the house of Orange-Nassau. From then on it had effectively become a dormant title: a title without land. But because it had become associated with the position of stadtholder of The Netherlands, the constitution that was passed in 1814 declared that any progeny of William I holding the title would be the rightful heir to the throne.

Anthem
During national holidays when the royal family was celebrated, such as Queen's Day, a folk song was often sung by repeating the line:
<blockquote>Oranje boven, oranje boven. Leve de koningin.</blockquote>
In English this means:
<blockquote>Orange above, orange above. Long live the queen.</blockquote>
The song has fallen out of fashion since 2013, in which year The Netherlands has gotten a king instead of a queen for the first time in a century; the line <nowiki/>'Leve de koning does not fit in the meter. Still, due to the former popularity of this song the sentiment of orange above lives on for the people of The Netherlands.

The position of the Dutch flag during pl1 could not be planned; the event took everyone by surprise. The orange band that was added to the flag naturally filled in the space above it, then expanded to its right and eventually to its left.

During succeeding editions of r/Place anyone was able to plan ahead. Deciding on a location, the community of PlaceNL has had a strong preference for the top horizontal lane of the canvas every time. This hasn't necessarily been because of the precedent. Rather, this has been because of the inclination to make orange above apply to the entire canvas.

Orange craze
During international sports competitions supporters may express their support for their nation's athlete(s) by dressing in the colors of their country's flag. The Dutch are one of the exceptions; they prefer to wear orange instead. The orange craze or orange fever is a phenomenon in The Netherlands that occurs during major sporting events. It manifests itself in the abundance of orange clothing worn and orange decorations put up. Parallels of this phenomenon can be drawn with the Scottish Tartan Army and the Italian tifosi.

In Dutch media the Dutch national team of any sports is often referred to as Orange.
But the title Prince(ss) of Orange was held on by members of the house of Orange-Nassau. The title had effectively become a title without claim to land, but it had become associated with the position of stadtholder of The Netherlands.
The Dutch flag represented the Dutch people on the canvas. At the start of each edition of r/Place, the flag manifested on top of the canvas. It acted as a backdrop for Dutch related artwork. And it was the most recognizable work made by the community of PlaceNL on the canvases of r/Place.
Orange Pennant
The flag of The Netherlands has always been drawn on r/Place with an orange band on top of it, and is thought of by the PlaceNL community as an essential part of the flag.

History
The red-white-blue flag with an orange pennant was flown when The Netherlands regained its independence and the Prince of Orange returned from exile. But some where convinced another flag design, with orange instead of red, was the true flag that represented the country. To end the discussion, a royal decree in 1937 established the colors of the Dutch flag:

<blockquote>
The colors of the flag of the Kingdom of the Netherlands are red, white and blue.

—Queen Wilhelmina, translated from Dutch.
</blockquote>
It would go into history as the shortest decree ever issued in The Netherlands.
During each edition of r/Place, a band of orange manifested on top of the canvas and bordered to the flag of The Netherlands below. The band of orange is not part of the flag, but the members of PlaceNL considered it essential to include it.

The band of orange could either represent the orange pennant that's flown with the flag during national holidays with the purpose of celebrating the royal family. Or it could represent the orange outfits people wear to express their support for the Dutch national team during international sports competitions. However, it's possible—but not necessary—for a member of PlaceNL to hold both as their motivation.

Although he held the title Prince of Orange—a principality in present-day France—and although he is considered the ancestor of the Dutch royal house, he never held a position within a monarchy.

During national holidays when the royal family was celebrated, such as the Queen's Day, a folk song was often sung by repeating the line:

Orange Above
The flag of The Netherlands has always been drawn on r/Place with an orange band on top of it, and is thought of by the PlaceNL community as an essential part of the flag. The orange band could represent the orange pennant that is flown with the flag on days when the Dutch royal family are celebrated. But it could also represent the orange outfits the Dutch wear to support their country during events, such as sports competitions.

Your mind drifting away to you falling asleep in a float in a swimming pool. A Fristi in hand, enjoying your well-earned holiday. But then you got a flat tire. And you snapped out of your daydream while your car slowed to a halt. You stepped out of your car in the middle of nowhere. You checked your phone: there wasn't a single Wi-Fi hotspot there. And then, to make everything worse, your battery died. No ANWB Wegenwacht Van was coming to your rescue... You would have to do what you could with the things you had brought with you.

That was precisely the situation the members of PlaceNL found themselves in at the start of third edition. The Dutch flag represented the Dutch people on the canvas. And also acted as a backdrop for Dutch related artwork. The flag manifests on top of the canvas, and has always been drawn on r/Place with an orange pennant on top of it.

Description
Since the Middle Ages, the Dutch were divided on what flag to rally behind. The red-white-blue flag with an orange pennant was flown when The Netherlands regained its independence and the Prince of Orange returned from exile. But just before the outbreak of World War II, the orange-white-blue Prince's Flag resurfaced again. Some people were convinced that these colors were the true colors of the Dutch flag, particularly members of the National Socialist Movement in the Netherlands. To end the discussion, a royal decree in 1937 established the colors of the Dutch flag:

<blockquote>
The colors of the flag of the Kingdom of the Netherlands are red, white and blue.

—Queen Wilhelmina, translated from Dutch.

The Mauritshuis was originally a city palace, but since 1822 it's a museum in The Hague. It houses the Royal Cabinet of Paintings, mostly paintings by Dutch masters from the 17th century. The building was designed in Dutch-Baroque style by Jacob van Campen.

The Mauritshuis, as seen in the third edition of r/Place, was part of an architecture collage. The other artworks in the collage were: the Cube Houses, the Royal Palace of Amsterdam, and the Dom Tower. The artwork was completed around 11:00 GMT on July 25th on the Flag of The Netherlands, ceding territory to Rin Tohsaka until both parties agreed to relocate the pixel art of Rin Tohsaka. And it remained until the Great Whiteout.

Conflict
Construction of the pixel art started at 13:30 GMT on July 24th. A portion of its roof claimed the same territory as r/fatestaynightplace, who built Rin Tohsaka at the same time the Flag of The Netherlands was extended the moment the canvas expanded. Having defended Rin Tohsaka effectively, r/fatestaynightplace eventually agreed with PlaceNL to relocate the Rin Tohsaka pixel art to another part of the PlaceNL's territory, which commenced one day after the start of the conflict around 7:30 GMT, to the location it would remain until the Great Whiteout under the protection of PlaceNL.

Art Collection
The Mauritshuis is, as of 2023, in use as a museum. To its collection belong the famous masterpieces Girl With a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer, and The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp by Rembrandt van Rijn.
The church tower is considered the symbol of Utrecht. The tower was part of St. Martin's Cathedral and was built between 1321 and 1382, to a Gothic design by John of Hainaut. The cathedral was never fully completed due to lack of money. Since the unfinished nave collapsed in 1674, the Dom tower has been a freestanding tower. The tower stands at the spot where the city of Utrecht originated almost 2000 years ago.
Cube houses (Dutch: kubuswoningen) are a set of innovative houses built in Helmond and Rotterdam in the Netherlands, designed by architect Piet Blom in 1978. The first cube houses were constructed in Helmond in 1974 and 1975. There are 38 cubic stilt houses and cubic businesses in Rotterdam.

History
In the '70s of the 20th century, architects, with participation of inhabitants and other users, wanted to create hospitable residential areas, in response to the large-scale grey modernism of reconstruction after the Second World War. Piet Blom, a structuralist, assumed that large-scale buildings had to be built to human-scale by building them from small-scale recognizable elements. The idea of building houses on columns, so that the space below the buildings can remain public, originates from Le Corbusier.
Het Klokhuis brings general knowledge to a young audience. The program first aired in January 1988, and is still running.

Each episode has a theme and can be divided in two parts: education, and drama. The educational part often takes the form of a report. The drama part often features comedic sketches and songs that emphasize the emotional aspects and the moral and ethical considerations of the theme.
In 1990 the program was threatened with cancellation by its managing board. An initiative to save Het Klokhuis managed to collect 30 000 signatures. This initiative led to the the cancellation of the program being discussed in the Dutch parliament. The managing board then conceded that their assessment was wrong, and stated that Het Klokhuis was allowed to continue its run on television.

See the German-Dutch Yin-yang, the German-Dutch Bicycle, the German-Dutch Poland Balls, and the German-Dutch Picture Frame. This art can be considered the culmination of that mutually beneficial partnership; only being completed shortly before the whiteout of 2023.
