The States Lion was a collaborative pixel art during {{pl3}} of the communities of [[Belgium]], [[PlaceNL|The Netherlands]], and [[Luxembourg]] during {{pl3}}. Together these countries form the Benelux, a politico-economic union. The countries have languages and history in common. In particular they formed one faction together in the Eighty Years' War.

The lion historically represents the Low Countries area as a whole, since each constituent nation possesses a coat of arms featuring the ''Leo Belgicus''; a lion rampant facing left. During the 17th century the lion already symbolized the Low Lands.

The ''Leo Belgicus'' is featured on the coat of arms of each member nation of the Benelux union. The symbol originates from the Eighty Years' War (1566 – 1648), and it symbolized the Dutch Republic that fought for its independence. The Dutch Republic consisted of what is present-day Belgium, The Netherlands, and Luxembourg.

The symbol is also featured in the coat of arms of the house of Orange-Nassau, which [[William the Silent]] founded, and of which descendants belong to the royal family of The Netherlands, among whom are the current king and queen of The Netherlands: [[Willem-Alexander and Máxima]].

The German boy and Dutch girl characters were a collaborative art piece meant to symbolize the cooperative relationship that the communities of [[PlaceNL]] and [[PlaceDE]] developed in the course of [[r/place_2023]]. It was completed around 18:00 GMT on July 25th, and remained until the [[The_Great_Whiteout|Great Whiteout]].

==Collaboration==
During the third edition of r/Place, the communities of PlaceDE and PlaceNL had collaborated on several other pieces before these characters came about. See the [[German-Dutch Yin-yang]], the [[German-Dutch Bicycle]], the [[German-Dutch Poland Balls]], and the [[German-Dutch Picture Frame]] articles. This pixel art can be considered the culmination of that mutually beneficial partnership; only being completed shortly before the whiteout of 2023.

==Kabedon==
Kabedon (Japanese: 壁ドン; ''kabe'', "wall", and "don", "bang") in Japanese media is a means of expressing romantic love or adoration<ref>[https://dic.nicovideo.jp/a/%E5%A3%81%E3%81%AB%E3%83%89%E3%83%B3 Bang on the wall]. dic.nicovideo.jp</ref>. The seducer leans over the object of their desire by placing their open palm on the wall behind them and reducing the distance between themselves, but making no physical contact.
Kabedon has garnered recognition in the Western world through media such as shōjo manga, otome games, anime, and cosplay. When Kabedon is performed in the West, it's usually meant as an expression of meme culture.

==The Characters==
The artwork referenced by the pixel art is a panel of the manga ''Ao Haru Ride (Blue Spring Ride)''<ref>[https://myanimelist.net/anime/21995/Ao_Haru_Ride Ao Haru Ride (Blue Spring Ride)]. MyAnimeList.net</ref>.

The boy was dressed in traditional lederhosen and wore a Tyrolean hat; this is a stereotypical Bavarian outfit, which may be associated with Germany. He held a frothy pint of beer, a reference to Oktoberfest<ref>[https://www.oktoberfesttours.travel/2014/10/19/oktoberfest-beer-consumption-2014/ Oktoberfest beer consumption 2014]. oktoberfesttours.travel</ref>.

The girl was not intended to depict Frau Antje, a mascot who advertises cheese of Dutch origin in Germany, but a link can be drawn between them<ref>[https://www.frauantje.de/ Frau Antje]. frauantje.de</ref>. She wore a Volendam dress and a Dutch bonnet. And she carried a wheel of cheese by means of a handbag.

Development of the pixel art started with the proposal of a PlaceNL member to collaborate with PlaceDE on a pixel art where both countries are represented by manga characters{{Citation needed}}. Different parts of the characters were then designed by, and reviewed by several members of both communities in a continuous back and forth.

During the development phase, a suggestion had been made to crop the image above the boy's crotch. The purpose of which was to mitigate the anticipated vandalism that would take the form of phallic shapes, which are not an uncommon sight on r/Place.

Thunderdome is a famous concept in hardcore techno and gabber music that was mainly used for a series of parties and CD-albums. It was organized by the Dutch entertainment company ID&T.<ref>[https://www.id-t.com/ourstory Our Story]. id-t.com</ref>

The first party was organized in a village near Amsterdam in 1992. The party held in December 2012 was advertised as being the end of Thunderdome. However, after the 2012 event, the party was brought back in 2017 for the 25th anniversary with a 2019 edition announced the following year. The church tower is considered the symbol of Utrecht. The tower was part of St. Martin's Cathedral and was built between 1321 and 1382, to a Gothic design by John of Hainaut. The cathedral was never fully completed due to lack of money. Since the unfinished nave collapsed in 1674, the Dom tower has been a freestanding tower. The tower stands at the spot where the city of Utrecht originated almost 2000 years ago.

The German boy and Dutch girl characters were a collaborative art piece meant to symbolize the cooperative relationship that the communities of [[PlaceNL]] and [[PlaceDE]] developed in the course of [[r/place_2023]]. It was completed around 18:00 GMT on July 25th, and remained until the [[The_Great_Whiteout|Great Whiteout]].

==Collaboration==
During the third edition of r/Place, the communities of PlaceDE and PlaceNL had collaborated on several other pieces before these characters came about. See the [[German-Dutch Yin-yang]], the [[German-Dutch Bicycle]], the [[German-Dutch Poland Balls]], and the [[German-Dutch Picture Frame]]. This art can be considered the culmination of that mutually beneficial partnership; only being completed shortly before the whiteout of 2023.
